Our Story

Serena del Mar is deeply rooted in history. Sixty years ago the land for Serena del Mar was purchased with the vision of building something great. Today, these dreams are taking shape through the efforts of some of the world’s most esteemed minds in planning, design, and architecture.

1968

Land for Serena del Mar is purchased

In 1968, Carlos Haime saw the promise of a brighter future north of Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a strong economy, rich cultural history and geographic beauty. He purchased the land with the vision of building something great as a continuation of this remarkable city.

1998

Land is donated for the creation of a military base

To ensure wellbeing and safety, a fully-equipped marine training base overlooking the surrounding region was built on donated land within Serena del Mar. Serena del Mar works hand in hand with local leaders and institutions to promote a healthy and safe environment for the community.

2006

Carlos and Sonia Haime Foundation

On October 5, 2006, Fundación Carlos y Sonia Haime is established to promote inclusive development and improve quality of life for the communities of Manzanillo del Mar and Tierra Baja. By providing the necessary support, these communities can become agents of their own development.

2007 – 2008

Planning Serena del Mar

Mario Noriega delivers the first master plan in September 2007. Subsequently, Ignacio Bunster of Wallace Roberts & Todd adjusts the plan to international environmental design standards. The final master plan is created by Marco Larrea of EDSA in December 2008.

2010

Moshe Safdie joins

On September 20, 2010, world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie comes on board to design Serena del Mar’s commercial and corporate area, the Gran Canal and the Serena del Mar Hospital.

2011

Novus Civitas founded

On January 19, 2011, Novus Civitas is founded to realize the development of Serena del Mar as its flagship project. As part of Serena del Mar’s mission of corporate social responsibility, on April 6, 2011, Corporación Manzanillo del Mar is founded as the project-specific entity for solidarity. A year later, Paisajes del Mar nursery was established to begin raising native plant species for landscaping.

Brandon Haw joins the team

In 2013, renowned architect Brandon Haw comes on board to design the first building within Centro Corporativo Serena del Mar, home to Universidad de Los Andes’ first satellite campus.

2014

A monumental year

On September 9, 2014, Corporación Manzanillo del Mar becomes Fundación Serena Del Mar. Prior Consultation agreements are signed with the communities of Villa Gloria, Manzanillo del Mar, and Tierra Baja to ensure inclusive development and maintain Serena del Mar’s mission of corporate social responsibility.

Serena del Mar today

On January 8, 2015, Serena del Mar breaks ground for its first project, the Centro Hospitalario Serena del Mar, which will be operated by Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá.

On May 27, 2015, groundbreaking begins on the first commercial building within the Centro Corporativo Serena del Mar, home of Universidad de los Andes’ first ever satellite campus. The city of Cartagena will inaugurate the Tunel de Crespo in October 2015, a key roadway for the development of the north.

Current projects

In the upcoming years, Serena del Mar will open its Sales Pavilion, Centro Corporativo’s first tower, the first Transportation Terminal in the North of Cartagena and Centro Hospitalario Serena del Mar’s first phase. Expected openings by 2018 include a residential development with Amarilo, Morros Eco’s Beachfront residential towers and a Multiplaza Serena del Mar which is currently being discussed with Grupo Roble.

The future of Serena del Mar

In 2019, the Viaducto del Gran Manglar, a national roadway infrastructure project, is scheduled to open at the footsteps of Serena del Mar. The Robert Trent Jones II designed golf course and pedestrian walking streets are predicted to open in 2020, accompanied by a complex of sports clubs and leisure offerings. Puerto Carlos, Serena del Mar’s destination entertainment marina is expected to open in 2021.
